What is a Working Days Calculator?
A working days calculator counts the number of business days between two dates, excluding weekends and public holidays. Instead of manually scanning a calendar and counting each day, you simply enter a start date and end date, and the calculator instantly returns the exact number of working days in that period.
In India, a standard working week is five days (Monday to Friday), though many industries such as retail, restaurants, and manufacturing operate on a six-day week with only Sunday as a day off. Public holidays declared by the central government, known as gazetted holidays, are also excluded from the working days count. This calculator supports all three weekend configurations, making it useful for a wide range of businesses.
- Count business days for payroll, project planning, contract deadlines, and invoice payment terms
- Excludes Saturdays and Sundays (or only Sundays) based on your organisation's weekly off pattern
- Includes all 2026 central gazetted public holidays for India automatically
- Useful for computing leave encashment, notice periods, and attendance-based salary calculations

How to Calculate Working Days Between Two Dates
Calculating working days manually involves three steps: counting total calendar days, subtracting weekend days, and subtracting public holidays that fall on weekdays. Here is the step-by-step method:
Working Days = Calendar Days - Weekend Days - Public Holidays
- Step 1: Count calendar days. Include both the start date and end date in your count. A range from July 1 to July 31 covers 31 calendar days.
- Step 2: Subtract weekends. For a 5-day week, count all Saturdays and Sundays in the range. For a 6-day week, count only Sundays.
- Step 3: Subtract public holidays. Only count holidays that fall on weekdays. If a gazetted holiday falls on a Sunday, it does not reduce the working day count further.
- Step 4: The result is your working days. This number is used for per-day salary calculations, notice period calculations, and project timelines.
For organisations that track employee attendance on a monthly basis, the total working days in a month serves as the denominator for calculating daily wages and loss of pay deductions.
Working Days Calculation Example
Let us walk through a practical example. Suppose you want to calculate working days from August 1, 2026 to August 31, 2026 for a 5-day work week.
Period: August 1, 2026 to August 31, 2026
Total calendar days: 31
Saturdays in August 2026: 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th = 4 Saturdays
Sundays in August 2026: 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th = 5 Sundays
Weekend days subtracted: 9
Public holidays on weekdays: Independence Day (August 15, Saturday in 2026) = 0 weekday holidays; Janmashtami (August 26, Wednesday) = 1 weekday holiday
Working days: 31 - 9 - 1 = 21 working days
| Month (2026) | Calendar Days | Weekends (Sat+Sun) | Gazetted Holidays | Working Days |
| January | 31 | 8 | 1 (Republic Day, Tue) | 22 |
| March | 31 | 9 | 2 (Holi, Ram Navami) | 20 |
| April | 30 | 8 | 3 (Good Fri, Ambedkar, Mahavir) | 19 |
| August | 31 | 9 | 1 (Janmashtami) | 21 |
| October | 31 | 8 | 2 (Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra) | 21 |
Indian Public Holidays 2026

| Ram Navami | April 2 | Thursday |
| Good Friday | April 3 | Friday |
| Eid ul-Fitr | March 31 | Tuesday |
| Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti | April 14 | Tuesday |
| Holi | March 18 | Wednesday |
| Mahavir Jayanti | April 10 | Friday |
| Independence Day | August 15 | Saturday |
| Janmashtami | August 26 | Wednesday |
| Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti | October 2 | Friday |
| Dussehra | October 12 | Monday |
| Diwali | October 31 | Saturday |
| Guru Nanak Jayanti | November 15 | Sunday |
| Christmas Day | December 25 | Friday |
Note that state governments may declare additional restricted holidays and optional holidays specific to their region. For a complete understanding of how public holidays affect staff leave entitlements, refer to the concept of holiday calendar management in your organisation.
Working Days vs Calendar Days
The distinction between working days and calendar days is critical for payroll processing, contract terms, and legal timelines. Calendar days include every day in a period, including weekends and public holidays. Working days exclude non-working days and represent actual business hours.
| Aspect | Calendar Days | Working Days |
| Definition | All days including weekends and holidays | Only weekdays excluding holidays |
| Used for | Delivery deadlines, maternity leave count, subscription periods | Payroll, salary calculation, project planning |
| Example: 30-day period | 30 days always | Approx. 20 to 22 days |
| Notice period | Often calculated in calendar days | Sometimes specified as working days in contracts |
| Salary per day | Monthly salary divided by 30 (fixed) | Monthly salary divided by actual working days |
For payroll purposes, using working days as the divisor gives a more accurate per-day salary figure. This is especially relevant when calculating loss of pay, overtime wages, or salary for employees who join or leave mid-month. The earned leave policy at most Indian organisations is also expressed in working days rather than calendar days.
Maternity leave under the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, however, is counted in calendar days. If you need to track maternity leave duration, the maternity leave calculator handles that separately.
