What is EPF Withdrawal?
EPF withdrawal refers to the process of taking money out of your Employee Provident Fund account, either partially (as an advance) or fully (upon retirement, resignation, or specific life events). The EPF scheme is managed by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), and every salaried employee contributing to EPF has the right to withdraw under defined conditions.
Unlike the PF calculator which estimates how your EPF corpus grows over time, this withdrawal calculator focuses on the opposite direction: how much you actually receive when you take money out, after TDS deductions and eligibility checks.
- Full withdrawal is allowed upon retirement at age 58, after 2 months of unemployment post-resignation, or on permanent disability
- Partial advance is available for medical emergencies, home purchase, marriage, education, and home loan repayment while still employed
- TDS at 10% applies if service is less than 5 years and the withdrawal amount exceeds ₹50,000
- EPFO 3.0 (launched mid-2026) enables UPI and ATM-based withdrawals with faster claim processing
How is EPF Withdrawal Amount Calculated?
The withdrawal amount depends on whether you are making a full withdrawal or a partial advance. For full withdrawal, the entire EPF balance (employee share + employer share + interest) is paid out. For partial advance, EPFO sets specific limits based on the purpose of withdrawal.
Net Payout = Eligible Withdrawal Amount − TDS Deducted
TDS is deducted only when the following conditions are met simultaneously:
Condition 1: Continuous service is less than 5 years (including service transferred from previous employers)
Condition 2: Total withdrawal amount exceeds ₹50,000
TDS Rate: 10% if PAN is submitted, 20% if PAN is not submitted
Exemption: Submit Form 15G (below 60 years) or Form 15H (60 years and above) to avoid TDS if total income is below the taxable limit
When you leave a job and your full and final settlement is processed, EPF withdrawal is a separate step handled directly through EPFO, not through the employer.
EPF Withdrawal Calculation with Example
Here is a step-by-step example for a full EPF withdrawal after resignation with 3 years of service.
EPF Balance: ₹4,50,000 (employee share ₹2,00,000 + employer share ₹1,80,000 + interest ₹70,000)
Service: 3 years (less than 5 years)
PAN submitted: Yes
TDS Rate: 10% (since service is less than 5 years and amount exceeds ₹50,000)
TDS Deducted: ₹4,50,000 x 10% = ₹45,000
Net Amount Received: ₹4,50,000 minus ₹45,000 = ₹4,05,000
If the same employee had transferred EPF from previous jobs and total continuous service was 5 years or more, TDS would be zero and the full ₹4,50,000 would be received tax-free. This is why EPF transfer is always recommended over withdrawal when switching jobs.
Why is Understanding EPF Withdrawal Rules Important?
Knowing the EPF withdrawal rules helps you avoid unnecessary TDS deductions, choose the right withdrawal type, and plan your finances better during job transitions or major life events.
- Avoid unnecessary TDS: Withdrawing EPF before 5 years of service triggers a 10% TDS. Transferring EPF instead of withdrawing preserves your service continuity and avoids this deduction entirely
- Know your partial advance limits: EPFO allows advances for specific purposes like medical treatment, home purchase, marriage, and education. Each purpose has different limits and service requirements
- Plan for retirement: At age 58, you receive the full EPF corpus tax-free. Understanding how much you will receive helps plan your retirement alongside other savings like NPS
- Restaurant staff turnover: The food service industry has high employee turnover. Understanding EPF withdrawal rules is critical for restaurant owners processing employee exits and for staff members managing their PF savings
- EPFO 3.0 awareness: The new UPI and ATM withdrawal features launched in 2026 make partial advances faster, but understanding eligibility and limits remains essential to avoid rejected claims
How to Use This EPF Withdrawal Calculator
This free EPF withdrawal calculator gives you the exact withdrawal amount, TDS deduction, and net payout in seconds. Follow these steps:
- Step 1: Enter your total EPF balance. You can find this on the EPFO member portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) or in your passbook. Include both employee and employer shares
- Step 2: Enter your monthly basic salary plus dearness allowance. This is used to calculate partial withdrawal limits. Check your salary breakup to find the basic salary component
- Step 3: Enter your total years of continuous EPF service. Include service transferred from previous employers. This determines whether TDS applies
- Step 4: Select the withdrawal type. Choose "Full Withdrawal" for resignation or retirement, or "Partial Advance" for specific purposes like medical, marriage, or home purchase
- Step 5: If partial advance, select the purpose. Each purpose has its own eligibility rules, minimum service requirement, and withdrawal cap

EPF Partial Withdrawal Rules and Limits
EPFO allows partial withdrawals (advances) from your PF account for specific purposes while you are still employed. Each purpose has its own eligibility criteria and withdrawal cap. Here are the rules as per the EPF Scheme, 1952:
Medical Treatment: Up to 6 months' basic salary or employee share with interest, whichever is lower. No minimum service required. For hospitalisation exceeding 1 month or major surgery
Marriage: Up to 50% of employee's share with interest. Minimum 7 years of service required. For marriage of self, children, or siblings
Education: Up to 50% of employee's share with interest. Minimum 7 years of service required. For higher education of self or children after class 10
Home Purchase: Up to 36 months' basic salary plus DA, or 90% of total balance, whichever is lower. Minimum 5 years of service required
Home Loan Repayment: Up to 36 months' basic salary plus DA. Minimum 10 years of service required
Home Renovation: Up to 12 months' basic salary plus DA. Minimum 5 years after home purchase advance
Pre-Retirement (Age 54+): Up to 90% of total EPF balance. Must be within 1 year of retirement age
Partial withdrawal for approved purposes is tax-exempt regardless of service years. Understanding your in-hand salary and EPF deductions helps you plan these withdrawals better.
EPFO 3.0: New Withdrawal Rules in 2026
EPFO 3.0, launched in mid-2026, introduced significant changes to how EPF members access their funds. These updates make the withdrawal process faster and more accessible.
- UPI-based withdrawals: Link your UAN to any UPI app and initiate partial advance claims directly from your phone. No need to visit the EPFO portal
- ATM withdrawals: EPFO-linked debit cards allow you to withdraw EPF advances from any ATM. Daily limit is ₹1 lakh
- Faster claim settlement: Auto-approved claims are processed within 3 working days, down from the earlier 10 to 15 days
- Aadhaar-based verification: KYC through Aadhaar eliminates the need for employer attestation on most withdrawal forms
- Real-time balance: EPF balance and transaction history are now available in real time through the UMANG app and EPFO portal
For restaurant and hospitality businesses with high staff turnover, EPFO 3.0 simplifies the PF withdrawal process for departing employees. Attendo (formerly Petpooja Payroll) automates EPF compliance, payslip generation, and exit processing for your entire team.
