Wallet Payment: Meaning, Types & Merchant Charges

What Is a Wallet Payment?

Somewhere between cash and a card sits money the customer parked in an app weeks ago.

A wallet payment is a purchase settled from a prepaid balance the customer loaded earlier, held in a digital wallet such as Paytm, PhonePe or Amazon Pay, or in a stored-value account the business runs itself. The Reserve Bank of India classifies these as prepaid payment instruments, so the money reaches you out of that parked balance, not from a live bank account.

Prepaid is the whole point. It is why a wallet sits oddly next to every other tender on your billing screen.

The bank-to-wallet hop already happened, which is why a wallet settles and costs differently from a bank transfer.

The Three Wallet Types Your Counter Will See

The RBI’s Master Direction on PPIs sorts wallets by where the balance may be spent.

TypeWhere the balance worksWhat that means
ClosedOnly at the business that issued itNot a payment system, so RBI does not supervise it
Semi-closedAcross a listed group of merchantsPaytm, PhonePe and Amazon Pay sit here
OpenAnywhere, with cash withdrawal allowedIssued by banks only

A balance you sell to your own regulars is a closed wallet, so a prepaid top-up can sit alongside your loyalty program without RBI authorisation. Two KYC bands cap what a customer may hold:

  • Minimum-detail wallet: Rs 10,000 outstanding at any time, loaded up to Rs 10,000 a month and Rs 1,20,000 a financial year.
  • Full-KYC wallet: up to Rs 2,00,000 outstanding, and clause 11.4.4 obliges the issuer to make it interoperable over UPI.

A draft revision went out on 22 April 2026 and has not been notified, so the 2021 direction, amended in December 2024, still governs.

Difference Between a Wallet Payment and a UPI Payment

Most staff will tell you PhonePe is UPI, and they are often right, because a full-KYC wallet must ride UPI, so the same QR sticker can be paid from two different pots of money.

AspectWallet paymentUPI payment

To the customer it feels like any other contactless payment. On your side it is a separate tender, and logging it as one stops a UPI payment being double-counted at cash-up.

Wallet Payment Example

Picture a 40-seat cafe near the Panjim market closing a Saturday lunch, two tables paying by wallet.

BillAmountInterchangeWhat it costs you
Table 4Rs 2,480Up to 1.1%, so about Rs 27.28Priced into the provider’s charge
Table 9Rs 1,860None, it is under Rs 2,000Nothing extra

Note: this is an invented example for illustration only. The rate depends on your merchant category and provider contract.

Why the Rs 2,000 Line Is Worth Watching

Since 1 April 2023, NPCI has charged interchange on merchant payments funded by a wallet over UPI once the amount crosses Rs 2,000: up to 1.1%, with lower rates for categories such as fuel at 0.5% and supermarkets at 0.9%. Three carve-outs stop it being a blanket charge.

Anything at or under Rs 2,000 attracts nothing. Small merchants in NPCI’s P2PM category, capped by a circular of 28 March 2024 at Rs 10,000 a transaction and Rs 1,00,000 of inward UPI a month, sit outside it altogether. And plain bank-to-bank UPI, the bulk of what crosses an Indian counter, is untouched.

The fee is not deducted from the bill in front of you either. It sits between your acquirer and the wallet issuer, then reaches you inside your provider’s pricing. Run the numbers through the restaurant profit margin calculator, and this guide to online payment management covers the provider side.

Check the Day’s Payments Before You Close

Interchange is only half the story, because the other half is whether anyone logged the payment as a wallet at all. Across the counters we work with, the cash-up problem is rarely a missing rupee but a payment sitting under the wrong mode, unnoticed until the bank statement disagrees a week later. The right billing software features close that gap.

For restaurants, Petpooja POSS turns the day into downloadable reports on sales, cancelled orders, payments and CRM, so a Saturday’s money sits on one screen. For retail businesses, Petpooja Invoice does the same at a GST counter, with automatic GST calculation, real-time GST liability tracking and business intelligence reports. Pull tonight’s report and see how your day split.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a wallet payment the same as a UPI payment?

No. A UPI payment debits a bank account in real time; a wallet payment spends a balance loaded earlier. The confusion is fair, because a full-KYC wallet must work over UPI.

Do I pay a charge when a customer pays by wallet?

At Rs 2,000 or below, nothing. Above it, interchange of up to 1.1% applies to wallet-funded UPI payments, though P2PM small merchants are exempt and the rate varies by category.

Can I run a prepaid balance for my own customers?

The RBI treats a balance spendable only at your own business as a closed system PPI, which it does not authorise or supervise. Cash withdrawal is not allowed, so it works as credit against future bills.

How much can a customer hold in a wallet?

Rs 10,000 at any time on a minimum-detail wallet, with loading capped at Rs 10,000 a month and Rs 1,20,000 a financial year. A full-KYC wallet stretches to Rs 2,00,000 outstanding.

When does the money actually reach my bank?

That depends on the issuer or aggregator you signed with, not on how fast the customer tapped. Check the settlement cycle in your contract before assuming Saturday’s takings land on Sunday.
