Monthly GST Return: Meaning, Due Dates & How It Works

What Is a Monthly GST Return?

For most registered businesses in India, GST is not a yearly job; it comes back every month.

A monthly GST return is the set of filings a regular taxpayer submits to the GST portal each month, chiefly GSTR-1 for outward sales by the 11th and GSTR-3B, the summary return under Section 39 of the CGST Act, for tax payment by the 20th of the following month. It is a recurring, two-step filing that reports what you sold, claims the input tax credit you are owed, and settles the tax due for that one month.

One Month, Two Filings By 11th GSTR-1 outward sales Around 14th GSTR-2B ITC statement By 20th GSTR-3B pay net tax
A regular taxpayer’s month runs on two deadlines: sales by the 11th, tax by the 20th.

Miss either date and the late fee starts the very next morning.

What a Monthly GST Return Involves

A regular filer’s month runs in three steps:

  1. File GSTR-1 with every sale by the 11th.
  2. Read the auto-drafted GSTR-2B around the 14th.
  3. File GSTR-3B and pay the net tax by the 20th.
ReturnWhat it reportsMonthly due date
GSTR-1Every B2B invoice, B2C sales totals, credit and debit notes11th of the next month
GSTR-2BAuto-drafted statement of the ITC you can claimGenerated around the 14th
GSTR-3BOutput tax, ITC claimed, and the net tax you pay20th of the next month

GSTR-2B is not something you file; the GST portal builds it from what your suppliers reported in their GSTR-1. You match it and carry the eligible credit into GSTR-3B. That single link is why one supplier’s late filing can quietly raise your cash outgo.

Monthly Filing vs QRMP: Who Files When

Not every business files every month; turnover decides the path.

AspectMonthly FilingQRMP (Quarterly)
Applies toTurnover above Rs 5 crore (compulsory); others who opt inTurnover up to Rs 5 crore who opt in
GSTR-1Every month, by the 11thOnce a quarter, by the 13th
GSTR-3BEvery month, by the 20thOnce a quarter, by the 22nd or 24th (state-wise)
Tax paidMonthly, with GSTR-3BStill monthly, via a PMT-06 challan by the 25th

The catch: tax never goes quarterly. You still pay every month; only the paperwork bunches into a quarter. A wholesaler who reads “quarterly” and stops setting aside money monthly gets a rude PMT-06 reminder.

Monthly GST Return Example

An FMCG distributor in Governorpet, Vijayawada closes its returns for June 2026. Its turnover tops Rs 5 crore, so it files monthly.

DateWhat happensAmount
11 July 2026GSTR-1 filed with all June sales invoicesSales Rs 24,60,000
14 July 2026GSTR-2B auto-drafts the claimable ITCITC Rs 1,73,900
20 July 2026GSTR-3B filed, ITC set off, net tax paidOutput Rs 2,18,400, paid Rs 44,500

The output tax on June sales was Rs 2,18,400. After setting off Rs 1,73,900 of ITC from the 2B, the distributor paid Rs 44,500 in cash. Each sales invoice carried the buyer’s GSTIN, and had one supplier skipped their own GSTR-1, part of that credit would have vanished.

Note: this is an invented example for illustration only. The names, figures, and dates are made up to show how a monthly return runs, not real data from any business.

Why Filing Every Month on Time Matters

Your monthly return is not just your own compliance; it feeds your buyers. When you file GSTR-1, those invoices become each buyer’s claimable credit in their GSTR-2B. Skip a month and you freeze their working capital, a fast way to lose a B2B customer.

There is a cost on your side too. A missed return draws a late fee of Rs 50 a day (Rs 20 for a nil return) plus 18% a year interest on the unpaid tax under Section 50 of the CGST Act. Across the 8,000+ businesses on Petpooja Invoice, we notice the ones that treat the 11th and the 20th as hard internal deadlines rarely see a notice. A GST calculator and the rules on GST for restaurants keep the sector traps off your desk.

File Every Monthly GST Return on Time With the Best GST Billing Software

The monthly grind is a data problem, and the right billing tool fixes it at source. Petpooja Invoice applies the correct CGST, SGST, or IGST split at billing through automated GST calculation, so your GSTR-1 already matches your books when the 11th arrives, no midnight Excel. That is what the best GST billing software should do: turn filing day into a review, not a rebuild. Across our Invoice base we see the pattern hold: clients like Computron close the month in one sitting. Keep a GST return filing checklist beside the dashboard, and picture your own two deadlines handled before the coffee cools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who has to file GST returns monthly?

Any regular taxpayer with aggregate turnover above Rs 5 crore must file monthly. Smaller businesses can choose monthly filing or opt for the quarterly QRMP scheme instead. Composition dealers follow a separate quarterly and annual track.

What is the due date for a monthly GST return?

GSTR-1 is due by the 11th of the following month and GSTR-3B by the 20th. So June’s returns are filed by 11 July and 20 July. The dates do not shift with your billing cycle; they are fixed by the portal.

Is GSTR-3B a monthly return?

For regular monthly filers, yes, it is due every month by the 20th. Under QRMP it becomes quarterly, though the tax itself is still paid monthly through a PMT-06 challan. Either way, GSTR-3B is where the payment actually happens.

What happens if I miss the monthly deadline?

The portal charges Rs 50 a day (Rs 20 for a nil return) plus 18% annual interest on any unpaid tax. Beyond the money, your buyers cannot claim credit on invoices you have not reported, so a delay strains your customer relationships too.
