5 Best Restaurant POS Software in India [November 2020 Update]

A POS software is the central technology powering any restaurant. The basic functionality of any restaurant POS is to make the bill once food is consumed.

However, today’s POS systems have evolved to do much more than plain vanilla billing. POS platforms handle billing and KOT management, Inventory and stock, Recipe, Menu (online as well as local menus), Reporting and much much more. Because of it’s mission critical nature, the choice of POS you use can have a significant impact on your business. While a good POS system can speed up operations significantly, a poorly chosen POS can hamper operations and cause lost revenue opportunities.

Which are the Top Restaurant POS Softwares in India?

Before we start comparing, let’s look at the parameters that you should use to judge a POS system (*click on each header to learn more)

Type and size of clients

A large and diverse client base is a great barometer of how good a POS Software is.

Technical Support

Support hours are a good indicator of how committed a company is to after-sales support.

Integrations

A POS needs to support several integrations from online ordering to payments and loyalty to be a single-point stop for a restaurant.

Pricing

Pricing should be transparent and clearly visible. It should also be affordable for end users and should allow configurability in features.

Cloud-sync

A 21st century outlet requires 21st century technology. Local or server-based software have several drawbacks like cost of infrastructure, maintenance, need for manual data transfer, no integrations and many more.

User Friendliness

A POS needs to be user friendly for it’s core users – the operational staff. It doesn’t need jazzy UI, all it needs to do is print a bill in the minimal steps possible.

Multi-terminal Billing

Web-based systems have a difficult time with multi-terminals in the same premises without additional hardware while desktop software can communicate over the local network

Offline Billing

India is a developing country with intermittency in internet connection. The POS you choose needs to work as well offline as it does online.

Software Stability

Browser-based software are inherently not stable over longer periods of usage because of the browser cache getting full. As a result, most mission-critical B2B companies use Desktop-based software.

Field Presence

A company with ground presence will be able to provide better support on the field.

R&D

Technology is always evolving. So look for a POS that will support you in leveraging newer avenues like robotics, AI etc and provide you easy to implement solutions that leverage these technologies.

While all core modules like billing, inventory, menu, reporting etc are included, add-on features and products can be purchased from the marketplace allowing you the freedom to pay for only those services/products that are useful to you!

Cloud
Petpooja is a cloud-based software with a desktop app that syncs with the cloud at a predefined interval. The billing software is a desktop app while the owner (admin) dashboard is online (available on web and app)

User-friendliness:
Petpooja was made from the ground up with the philosophy of billers not having to change their working style. Petpooja was made for speedy billing along with hotkeys – ensuring that any biller can get acquainted with the system and operational in under 30 minutes.

Multi-terminal Billing:
Petpooja’s Restaurant Software is a multi-terminal system out of the box. Any number of terminals can be used simultaneously and bills punched in one machine can be edited in the second and printed from the third. All terminals are in real-time sync without the need for any additional

Offline Billing:
Being a desktop based software, merchants can continue their billing operations for upto 5 days without any internet connection.

Stability:
A desktop app relies on core OS while web-apps rely on the power of the browser they are run in (creating another layer of virtualization) and are cache dependent. Petpooja, being a desktop app is very stable.

On-ground presence:
Right from sales to service, SMEs require an on-ground team to hold their hand. Petpooja’s team 350+ people is present in 50+ cities covering tier-2 and tier-3 cities as well apart from metros and tier-1 cities.

Research and Development:
Petpooja invests heavily in R&D, coming up with software innovations like recommendation engine as well as online payout reconciliation for Swiggy and Zomato. Apart from this, voice ordering (machine learning based model) as well as food service robot (complete hardware and software designed in-house) is also in the works and should be launched in 3 months time.

Network Effects
Petpooja leverages it’s huge restaurant network to benefit it’s merchants. Petpooja’s bazaar is a used good marketplace allowing sellers to quickly liquidate their under-utilized assets as well as allowing buyers to get their equipment cheaper. Petpooja is also launching it’s supplier marketplace, connecting restaurants with suppliers for each of their requirements, allowing price discovery and leveraging the power of the platform.

posist

POSist is an industry-veteran POS system which started off as cloud-native software. It focuses on mostly enterprise accounts and has shifted it’s focus to overseas customers as of late.

Client-base
7500 Clients in 20+ countries.

Support
On-field support available in metros, very limited support in tier-1 cities. However 24×7 support is available online.

Integrations
All the standard integrations – Online Aggregators, Payments, Tally, Hotellogix, Loyalty etc. However the Swiggy, Zomato integrations are limited, without rider information. Menu trigger is also not instantaneous. No Swiggy Pop integration.

Pricing
Posist is made for larger chains and enterprise clients. The pricing also reflects this philosophy. There are no stated prices, depends on the client requirements. There are a lot of variations in features as well, starting with basic billing at Rs 15,000 plus taxes per year for smaller clients going up to Rs 1,50,000 plus taxes per year for larger outlets with inventory and advanced reporting. Add-on modules are also considerable more expensive and require hardware to be procured from POSist.

Cloud
The POSist software is cloud-based and runs in the browser.

User-friendliness:
Since POSist is made for enterprise clients, the amount of configurability and customizations is very high. While sophisticated IT teams love this fact, an average user finds it difficult to use most features owing to a very steep learning curve.

Multi-terminal Billing:
Since POSist runs on the browser, which inherently cannot support multi-terminal billing because of every device being connected only on the cloud and not locally, POSist uses an additional wireless hardware to establish a local network to enable multi-terminal billing.

Offline Billing:
Since POSist is browser-based, any loss to the cached memory causes a permanent loss of data. Also, reports cannot be accessed offline.

Stability:
POSist is a browser-based software. Since a browser is inherently limited in the amount of system resources that it can access, extended billing times cause the browser and hence POSist to crash.

On-ground presence:
POSist is present in 20+ countries signaling a lot of geographical diversification. With a team of 150 employees, however, this geographical diversification also means that they are thinly spread across their core Indian market and have limited on-ground staff.

Research and Development:
No known efforts to leverage next-gen technologies.

Network Effects
No network leverage known.

Limetray

Limetray is primarily an online-ordering and aggregator management platform. POS is an additional product that they budle with their core online ordering and marketing suite.

Client-base
4500+ restaurants use their offering. However most large brands like Burger King use only their order aggregation product (LT merge) and it’s unknown how many merchants actually use the Limetray POS.

Support
Online-only support, no on-ground team. While their home-page claims 24 hour support, their support page has calling times 10 PM to 12 AM written. Chat support is available 24×7.

Integrations
3 online ordering integrations listed. No Loyalty, Payments or ERP integrations.

Pricing
No standard advertised pricing, varies by client and modules. Their Turbo Package (which lies below their top Supercharger package) costs Rs 80,000 plus taxes per year.

Cloud
Like Petpooja, Limetray is also a cloud-native POS system.

User-friendliness:
Limetray is a simple system to use with a clean User Interface. However this is also a result of very limited feature-set of the POS system.

Multi-terminal Billing:
Limetray does not support simultaneous billing on multiple terminals owing to a complete cloud-architecture where all systems are only connected to the Limetray cloud.

Offline Billing:
Limetray has a capability to conduct offline billing. However like all browser based POS systems, if the browser crashes when offline, all data is lost.

Stability:
Limetray faces the same stability issues as all browser based systems owing to being limited by browser resources.

On-ground presence:
Limetray is present in 11 countries with offices in Gurugram, US and UAE. However, owing to limited field-staff, most support as well as onboarding is handled remotely.

Research and Development:
No efforts that are know of.

Network Effects
No intent shown to leverage their merchant network.

Torqus (now inresto) is a well-established player in the restaurant POS space. It was acquired by DineOut in 2018 and now is a part of their inresto offering. Torqus also has a number of products apart from POS like the Head Office Module and an ERP-like Supply Chain Module.

Client-base
8,000 Restaurants claimed on the platform, including supply chain and head office modules.

Support
Torqus support is available during working hours on call. While one-time menu entry is done by the Torqus team, any changes are all to be done by the customer. Their ground team is only present only in metros and every site visit is at an additional cost of Rs 1000. Even retraining charges are Rs 3000 per 4 hours as well as Rs 1000 for re-installation of POS.

Integrations
Torqus integrations include Zomato and Swiggy only. The integrations is only an order-integration, lacking menu sync and rider details.

Pricing
Rs 17,000 plus taxes per year per outlet only for the POS. For running multiple outlets and consolidating the data, one has to purchase the head office module additionally at a very steep price.

Cloud
Torqus is a cloud-based software that works in a browser.

User-friendliness:
Among all the POS players, Torqus has the most number of features. While this is good for specialized uses, a vast majority of people don’t use these features. As a result of having so many configurations and customizations, Torqus is very difficult to setup and use.

Multi-terminal Billing:
Torqus can work on multiple-terminals (upto 3). However the same limitations as other browser based systems apply. Because of each terminal being only connected to the central server, there is a significant delay in sync.

Offline Billing:
Torqus can work offline, but again browser restrictions apply. Browser based software don’t have a separate local database and store everything in the cache. Because of this, if the browser crashes or if for any reason the cache gets emptier, all the data is lost.

Stability:
Same issues as other browser based systems, extended billing times cause a heavy load on the browsers they run on causing it to crash periodically.

On-ground presence:
Torqus deals only with Indian clients. However even in India, their ground team is present only in Metros.

Research and Development:
Torqus does not invest in R&D.

Network Effects
No intent shown to leverage their merchant network.

SlickPOS is a new entrant to the Restaurant POS market based out of Coimbatore. They are still at nascent stage company with limited features and ground presence.

Client-base
Claims to be working with 2000 outlets.

Support
Limited ground support even in metros. Only chat support is available.

Integrations
Zomato and Swiggy integrations through UrbanPiper, no loyalty or ERP integrations mentioned. UrbanPiper Integration is not a direct integration and hence there are a lot of issues when either Zomato or Swiggy update or modify their APIs.

Pricing
SlickPOS has a free version with very limited capabilities. The paid version with all functionalities costs Rs 999 per month or Rs 9999 per year.

Cloud
SlickPOS is a cloud-based system with web-app as well as desktop and android apps.

User-friendliness:
Don’t have enough information to comment.

Multi-terminal Billing:
Does not support multi-terminal billing since each device is directly connected to the cloud without a local bridge.

Desktop app supports offline billing. The web-app also support offline billing but only on chrome. Also if the browser crashes before sync, all data is lost.

Stability:
Don’t have enough information to comment.

On-ground presence:
SlickPOS has ground-team only in Coimbatore and clients mostly in Coimbatore and and other southern states of India.

Research and Development:
No R&D efforts known of.

  1. Very Well analysed.
From alpha to omega every thing has been covered, which is the basic requirement of a client.
    Praising effort team..!!

    1. Thank you for the appreciation Prateek. We have done our best to provide a comprehensive overview of the entire landscape!

  2. At least have the dignity of checking what you’re writing – just because you cannot verify something or do not have the presence of mind to do so, doesn’t mean you publish whatever false rubbish that comes to your mind.

    Grow up!

    1. Kshitij, if you have something factually incorrect to point out, please do so.

We have the “dignity” and “presence of mind” to check what we are writing, although these terms do not apply XD

We do out best to be objective, and give readers a TL;DR of the industry.

If you would be so kind as to point out the “false rubbish” I’ll be glad to either i) take it down if it is incorrect or ii) debate it out with you.

However seeing as you haven’t provided your correct email, I doubt that you are up for either.

  3. Is there any grievance redressal system available in petpooja ? Can you please share the details ( ie Email address or contact no ) ?
